Two persons died on the spot when a three-wheeler fell down a 500-foot precipice at Heyaswatte area on the Ratnapura-Deniyaya main road, in the Kolonne police division and two others driver sustained injuries and were hospitalized. The deceased in the accident are P. Walliamma (61) and Karapannan Loganathan (62) residents of Heyaswatte.
The accident had taken place at about 4.30 pm on Friday 17 and three persons resident at Heyaswatte had travelled in a three-wheeler to the Buthkanda town to obtain medicine. They had obtained medicine from a dispensary and were on the way back home when the driver of the three-wheeler lost control and fell down a precipice. Two of the persons travelling in the back seat of the vehicle had died on the spot and the driver and another person who had been injured had been admitted to the Kolonne Regional Hospital. The deceased and the two persons hospitalized were all residents of Heyaswatte and the driver (28) of the three- wheeler and 62-year-old husband of the woman who died had sustained injuries.
The area in which the accident took place has many steep slopes and bends. The driver of the three-wheeler has been taken into custody by the police and the Kolonne police is conducting further investigations.
