Assault at Grandpass police, wife asked to withdraw complaint

The Police Headquarters has received a complaint on an assault by a Police team led by the Officer In-Charge of Crimes Division of Grandpass Police on Dhanaka Thushantha,  a candidate of the Local Government Elections, who is contesting for the Colombo Municipal Council from an Independent Group.

The attack had taken place on February 13. Thushantha is currently receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital. The victim’s wife has complained to the Police Headquarters that her husband had been dragged on the road, taken to the Crimes Division of Grandpass Police and brutally assaulted with cricket stumps.Hospital sources said that his left arm bone, which had been injured, was fixed with 30 stitches. Many bruises could also be seen on his body.

The candidate, who suffered injuries, is a resident of Raja Mawatha, Pita Kotte. He owns a two-storied building near Grandpass Police. He had gone to that building in Grandpass on February 13. He had had an argument with a three-wheeler driver for blocking the entrance to his building. At that time, the Crimes OIC, who was passing that area, had intervened. The candidate had gone inside the building without replying to him.

After this incident, a Police team led by the Crimes OIC had arrived at the location and taken the candidate to Grandpass Police. After assaulting him, the Police had admitted the candidate to the hospital, stating that he sustained injuries due to a road accident. However, the victim’s wife had informed the Hospital Police that it was not an accident, but an assault by the Police.

The wife of the candidate said that she has come under pressure by the Police to withdraw the complaint. She has requested a fair investigation into the incident. She pointed out that the questionable police officer was still working at Grandpass Police, and the Police had forcefully taken away the DVR of the security camera, in which the incident had been recorded.
