A suspect who was convicted of raping an underaged girl was sentenced to 58 years and six months rigorous imprisonment by Kandy High Court Judge R.S.S.Sapuvida.
The suspect was charged in High Court for raping a mentally challenged girl in Meda Mahanuwara between December 18, 2012 and February 18, 2013.
As the suspect had committed the offence on three occasions, he was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for each offence. In addition the convict was also ordered to be imprisoned for two and half years for failing to pay a compensation of Rs.1 million for the victim.
The judge also ordered him to be imprisoned another year for failing to deposit Rs 15,000 to the Witnesses Assistance and Protection Fund.
