AG’s powers pruned under 20A - Bimal

Former JVP Parliamentarian Bimal Rathnayake yesterday said that Auditor General has been removed from auditing State companies through the draft 20th Amendment to the Constitution. He said that the role played by the Committee on Public Enterprise and Committee on Public Accounts has been reduced considerably.

Addressing a press conference at party headquarters in Battaramulla, Rathnayake said more and more corruption and financial malpractices may take place in Government institutions in the future.

“There is no possibility to investigate corrupt activities taking place in many government institution including SriLankan Airlines and the Ceylon Electricity Board in the future,”he said.

He said Parliament cannot inquire into the finance management of these institutions under the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.Nobody can question the appointment of 90 persons as Coordinating officers to the Highways Ministry as in the past, where the Auditor General had cited such appointments in his report then”, he said.
