Colombo lawyers protest against AG’s order

Colombo Magistrate’s Court lawyers staged a silent protest in front of the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court stating that the order issued by the Attorney General to arrest Embilipitiya High Court Judge Gihan Pilapitiya was an arbitrary act.

Attorney Gunarathna Wanninayake said the Attorney General’s role is only to guide and assist the judiciary and it is not the Attorney General’s role to issue orders to arrest judges. Counsel Wanninayake called the Attorney General to withdraw the order issued by him.

“The Attorney General is hunting a selected group of people. The Attorney General did not enforce the law regarding Deputy Solicitor General Dilrukshi Dias Wickremasinghe. A group of lawyers from the Lawyer’s Association will meet the President and the Prime Minister to discuss regarding the matter,” Counsel Gunarathna Wanninayake said. Instead of hunting only a few people, we urge the Attorney General to enforce the law in general, the Counsel added.

Attorney Manju Sri Chandrasena said State Counsel are visiting judges chambers before the beginning of court proceedings and they discuss details about the ongoing court cases. It will cause. It is a great injustice for the defendants.
