Petroleum Ministry shooting: Arjuna’s guard files for bail

MP Arjuna Ranatunga’s Ministerial Security Division (MSD) officer, who allegedly fired at a mob at the Petroleum Ministry on October 28, was further remanded till February 28 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne.

President’s Counsel Shavendra Fernando with attorney Sanjaya Gamage appearing for the suspect informed court that they had filed a bail application in the Colombo High Court.

Colombo Crimes Division officials informed court that they directed extracts of the investigations to the Attorney General for further instructions.The CCD informed court that instructions from the Attorney General have not been received.

On October 28, a tense situation arose when a mob allegedly attempted to assault former Petroleum Resources Development Minister Arjuna Ranatunga, who attempted to enter his office at the Ministry in Dematagoda.

MP Ranatunga’s security officer fired at the mob injuring two people. One of the injured died in hospital. Ranatunga was detained inside the premises until the Special Task Force (STF) personnel rescued him.
