Reservoirs filling up

The public relations officer of the Moragahakanda – Kaluganga irrigation project said the reservoirs are fast filling up.

He said that 55 percent of the Moragahakanda Reservoir which has the capacity of 400,000 acre feet is full at present, while the Kaluganga Reservoir, which has a capacity of 260,000 acre feet, is also filling up, submerging Pallegama town.

Under the Moragahakamda Reservoir, 16 traditional villages in the area were submerged. Twelve such villages under the Kaluganga Reservoir are to be sunk.

Hence, 30 traditional villages would be deleted from the village name list of the country.

Meanwhile, 3,000 displaced families under these projects have been re-settled in the low land area of the Kaluganga project, providing all infrastructure facilities, the officer said
