The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has sent 1,678 Sri Lankans for employment opportunities in South Korea for the past three months beginning from January.
The Foreign Employment Bureau has planned to send 6,500 Sri Lankans for jobs in South Korea this year.
With the commencement of the duties of the Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara, discussions were held with the authorities to get more job opportunities for Sri Lankans in South Korea.
According to the Ministry, dispatching persons for Korean jobs, which had been slow,has been expedited with the intervention of Minister Nananyakkara. SLBFE said that several groups are leaving for jobs to South Korea per week with the direct intervention of the minister.
As a result, the SLBFE has been able to send 1678 Sri Lankans to work in South Korea since January this year. Among them 1398 people went there for the first time to work in South Korea, and 280 people who went back to work in the same place after completing the their term.Out of this, 1,490 people have left to work in the manufacturing sector and 188 people for jobs in the fishing sector.This group consists of 1,662 male workers and 16 female workers.
Sri Lankans are provided with employment opportunities in South Korea, according to the Memorandum of Understanding between the SLBFE and the South Korean Human Resources Department. Based on the MoU, Sri Lankans have been going to work in South Korea continuously since 2004, and today the young community has become more interested in going to work in South Korea.
