New Delhi: Leaders of several opposition parties have offered their support to the demand for restoration of statehood in Jammu and Kashmir, and election in the erstwhile state. They have also decided to visit Srinagar in may to insure their support for the people of the valley.
An all-party delegation of Jammu and Kashmir led by former J&K CM Farooq Abdullah met with several opposition leaders in Delhi and then they visited the Election Commission of India and submit their demand for an Assembly election without any further delay.
Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar said that leaders from all opposition parties will visit Srinagar in May to share the pain of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Representatives of DMK, TMC, CPIM, RJD, SP, AAP, Congress, and INC met with the delegation of the former state at the Constitutional Club in Delhi.
After meeting with the Election Commission of India, senior National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah said that the poll panel has assured them that they would take all necessary steps to conduct election.
All political parties want election and there is no reason to delay the poll further, said Abdullah.
In August 2019, the Union government scrapped the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated it into two Union territories (J&K and Ladakh). Since then the northern state is govern by the central government via Lieutenant Governor.
