This comes a day after state Health Minister Tanaji Sawant informed the state Assembly about 2 suspected deaths due to the H3N2 infection.

“Two persons have died due to influenza, including a 23-year-old first-year student of MBBS in Ahmednagar. He tested positive for Covid-19 as well as H1N1 and H3N2 viruses. Another victim is a 74-year-old man from Nagpur, who died of H3N2,” the minister had told the Assembly.

In the latest, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) announced that in several parts of the nation, cases of intense cough and fever may link to the Influenza A subtype H3N2 virus.

What is H3N2?

The H3N2 is a subtype of the seasonal Influenza. Young children and old age persons with co-morbidities are the most vulnerable groups in context of seasonal influenza. So far, Karnataka and Haryana have confirmed one death each from H3N2 influenza.

Seasonal influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. India every year witnesses two peaks of seasonal influenza: one from Jan to March and other in post monsoon season.
