Nagaland elects its first women ‘MLA’ in 60 years of statehood; Meet lawyer-activist Hekani Jakhalu

Nagaland Election: It’s been 60 years since Nagaland got statehood, and since then people of Nagaland never elected a woman to its legislative assembly. But, Today a glorious history has been created by the people of Nagaland as voters of the Dimapur-III constituency elected a Woman candidate to the state’s legislative assembly. 

Hekani Jakhalu, a candidate of BJP’s ally party NDPP won from the Dimapur-III constituency. She is an activist, lawyer and one of four women candidates who were given tickets from political parties. Ms Jakhalu defeated Lok Janshakti Party’s candidate Azheto Zhimomi.

As counting is underway, another woman candidate Salhoutuonuo Kruse is leading from the Western Angami seat. She is also an NDPP candidate.

The BJP-NDPP alliance is set to retain power in Nagaland as their candidates are leading in more than 35 seats of 60 constituencies. The alliance had won 30 seats in the previous state’s legislative election while Nagaland People’s Front (NPP) won 26.
