NPP LG candidate wanted over job racket

The Special Investigation Division of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) arrested a suspect,

who had taken migrant workers to Laos on Tourist Visa, promising jobs in Thailand, and then abandoned them and cheated their money.

The suspect, Ruwan Pathirana, is a resident of Welipatanwila, Nonagama, Ambalanthota. Another suspect, who is allegedly connected to the racket, had escaped, and he is identified as Anura Samaranayake, a National People’s Power (NPP) candidate for the upcoming Local Government Elections. Investigations are on to arrest him.

The arrested suspect has been remanded until February 20 after being produced before the Hambantota Magistrate’s Court on Monday. The Court also ordered the suspect to immediately bring down the stranded migrant workers in Laos. He has allegedly cheated about Rs 1.9 million from the migrant workers.
