“World is watching”: UK PM Rishi Sunak on Taliban university ban for women

New Delhi: UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has criticized Taliban’s decision to ban University education for girls in Afghanistan and warned that “the world is watching”.

As a father to daughters, I cannot imagine a world in which they’re denied an education, he said.

In a tweet, the UK PM wrote, “As a father to daughters, I cannot imagine a world in which they’re denied an education. The women of Afghanistan have so much to offer. Denying them access to university is a grave step backwards. The world is watching. We will judge the Taliban by their actions.”

His comments come after reports Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers on Tuesday banned female students from attending universities.

The decision, according to a news agency AP report, was annnounced after a meeting on Tuesday.

A letter shared by the spokesman for the Ministry of Higher Education, Ziaullah Hashmi, told private and public universities to implement the ban as soon as possible and to inform the ministry once the ban is in place, the report said.

“I can’t fulfill my dreams, my hopes. Everything is disappearing before my eyes and I can’t do anything about it,” the report quoted a third-year journalism and communication student from Nangarhar University.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the decision and said ‘it will have a devastating impact on the country’s future’.

“I am deeply shocked by reports that the Taliban have suspended women and girls’ access to universities. The denial of education violates equal rights and will have a devastating impact on the country’s future,” Guterres tweeted.

I urge the Taliban to ensure equal access to education for all.
