Senior Pera students probed over ‘WhatsApp ragging’

Police has begun an investigation regarding a group of senior students of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences of the Peradeniya University said to have forwarded addresses of obscene websites online to new students and pressured them to view them and then respond. 

Chief Disciplinary Officer of Peradeniya University on Saturday (5) has filed a complaint with the Peradeniya Police about the related incident after a complaint was made by a new student of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences.

Investigations have revealed that a group of senior students of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences have formed a WhatsApp group while including contact phone numbers of new students and had sent addresses and photos of obscene websites to it.

They are alleged to have pressured the new students to view and respond to them.

The Disciplinary Officer has also handed over to the police a telephone number along with some threatening audio tapes made to the new students asking them to respond after viewing obscene scenes and photographs.

The university has opened a web portal called Web Complain Box for students to submit complaints anonymously on the internet and the new student has submitted his complaint through it. The police are investigating the incident.
