Rifle misfires killing five-year-old child

A five-year-old child from Kataragama was reported dead after he was severely injured by an air rifle which misfired on Wednesday.  

According to Police, the father of the deceased had borrowed the air rifle from a servant of the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya a few weeks ago to shoot monkeys invading his home garden.

On Wednesday (16) evening the brother of the child’s father had come to their residence and he had attempted to use the air rifle to scare away a group of monkeys that had entered their garden.

The weapon failed to fire on this occasion but had later fired causing severe injuries to the child’s head.Following the accident, the child had been admitted to the Kataragama Hospital and then to the Hambantota hospital and later to the Karapitiya hospital, where he died last morning.

The deceased was a student of the Kataragama Primary School. Police have arrested the 18-year-old uncle of the deceased child along with the air rifle.Police are investigating.
