NIOSH to be made chartered body - Manusha

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) will be made a chartered body, Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara said.

He said the Institute has the required resources, capacity and leadership to be the best of its kind in South Asia, adding that this goal has to be realized.

He was participating in an Occupational Safety and Health Conference as the Chief Guest. He pointed out that about 4,000 accidents are reported annually at work sites in Sri Lanka, and about 600,000 man-days are lost as a result.

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health functions under the Labour Ministry and it conducts programmes and training to create a healthy workforce by preventing vocational accidents and illnesses.

The Minister pointed out that the Government has proposed a National Productivity Commission and a Social Security Fund through the Budget 2023 to protect the country’s workforce and improve its productivity.

He pointed out that an integrated marketing and communication plan would be implemented for the Institute from next year.
