A 10-year-old boy was killed after he was mistakenly attacked with a knife by his step-father in an attempt to attack the child’s mother at Morawaka in Kosmodara yesterday.
It was reported that the husband and the wife had an argument on Thursday evening on a money related issue, following which the husband had left home by his motorbike. Then the wife also had followed him to go to the Police to lodge a complaint against him with two sons by another bike.
“An argument between the husband and the wife had developed when the wife refused to give the husband money to buy cigarettes. He has been identified as a drug addict,” Police said.
On her way to the Police station, the duo had met again and there the husband had attempted to attack her with a knife. Unfortunately, the knife had mistakenly hit one of the boys who was on the bike and injured him. Following the incident the child was admitted to the Morawaka Kosnilgoda Hospital and was transferred to Karapitiya hospital where he died on Friday morning.
The deceased, H.G. Sadew Methsara of Grade 5 was to sit the scholarship examination this year. The person who attacked the child has been arrested by the Kosmodara Police. He is a former member of a popular music band based in the Southern Province.
According to the Police, both the husband and the wife have two children each from previous marriages. They had married each other about six months ago. The child who died in this accident belongs to the wife. Police are investigating.
