Milka begins her Olympic Qualifying bid in UK

Sri Lanka’s first gymnastic Olympian Milka Gehani de Silva will begin her qualifying bid for the 2024 Olympics when she competes in the 51st FIG Artistic World Gymnastics Championships, which begins in Liverpool, England today.

More than 400 top world class athletes from all corners of the world will go head-to-head over nine action-packed days at the M and S Bank Arena at this Olympic qualifying event.

Milka, along with her Japanese Coach Itho Soho arrived in Liverpool, confident of improving her rankings following a pleasing performance at the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships held in Doha, Qatar recently.

The 19-year-old secured her place at the World Championships by finishing among the top eight at the Asian Meet along with Aida Bauyrzhanova (Kazakhstan), Rifda Irfanaluthfi (Indonesia), Dildora Aripova (Uzbekistan), Nadine Joy Nathan (Singapore), Ominakhon Khalilova (Uzbekistan), Korkem Yerbossynkyzy (Kazakhstan) and Sasiwimon Mueangphuan (Thailand). Milka, of course had been training in preparation for this event in Japan through a scholarship received from the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka in 2019.
