Free Stalin, desist from arresting union leaders - Sajith

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa questioned as to why the government is arresting trade union leaders such as Joseph Stalin who protested peacefully. Condemning Stalin’s arrest, Premadasa visited him at Fort police station yesterday (4).

Premadasa questioned why leaders like Stalin who represents the voice of people is arrested when others reputed to instigate violence on people gets to walk free. Premadasa also pointed out that this was a time when attempts should be made to work together rather than terrorizing people. He demanded the government to put a stop to state-terrorism.

Premadasa also said that when Ranil Wickremesinghe was an MP, he said arresting a union leader like Stalin would lead to the country losing the GSP concession. He questioned if it would not be the same case now. Premadasa noted that trying to solve problem by terrorizing people is not the answer and urged the government to opt for discussions.

The Opposition Leader also said that any citizen has the right to stand for his/her opinion, to speak, to meet, to protest peacefully, and said that no one can violate the right to any non-violent struggle.Premadasa noted that Joseph Stalin used his rights democratically for the sake of the country and no one can oppose these actions.
