Fraudster arrested with guns, revolvers in Minuwangoda

The Police Special Task Force (STF) arrested a businessman known as ‘Hal Sameera’ along with several weapons in his possession at a rented house in Minuwangoda on Monday (22).

He is a suspect wanted in connection with several financial frauds committed by him by issuing dud cheques to other businessmen for purchasing rice stocks from them, police said.

Warnakulasooriya Kristembuge Sameera Sampath Fernando alias “Hal Sameera” had issued dud cheques to the value of Rs.24.5 million to businessmen.

He used to be a rice businessman and had issued these cheques to the other businessmen after his businesses went bankrupt.

The Marawila, Na-Ula, Dehiattakandiya, Minuwangoda, Kuliyapitiya, Maho, Hambantota and Negombo Courts had issued 14 arrest warrants on the suspect as he was evading Court with regard to these crimes.STF found two revolvers made in Italy, one shotgun made in China, a sword, ten 09mm type bullets, two 0.38mm type bullets and eleven 12-bore type bullets from his residence.

He had confessed that the weapons were purchased from a person in Kandy whom he met at the prison.

The suspect had intimidated the rice businessmen using these weapons due to his failure to pay them money for the rice stocks purchased from them.A case against him for threatening a businessman is being heard at the Thambuththegama Court, police said.

The STF has handed over the suspect to Minuwangoda Police for further investigations.
