CID to expedite probe into President elect’s residence

The Criminal Investigation Department has decided to expedite the investigation into the arson attack on President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s private residence on July 9.

Department sources said that an additional group of investigators has also been deployed with the intent of expediting the investigations.

Only four suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident and they are residents of Galle, Mount Lavinia and Ja-Ela.

Investigation is also continuing against a son of former Deputy Minister who had allegedly released a video on social media calling for the people near the President’s private residence on July 9.

CID sources said that this former Deputy Minister is presently an organizer of an Opposition party in the Gampaha district. Police said that this suspect in question had fled to Dubai following the incident. Police believe that the suspect may have left an European country from there.
