Hollywood star Johnny Depp has won his libel case against his former wife Amber Heard. It took the jury of five men and two women just 13 hours to reach their verdict. The jury has ordered Amber Heard to pay compensatory damages of $10 million and punitive damages of $5 million
Depp was not present during the verdict. Amber Heard’s legal team termed Depp’s absence as his ‘lack of seriousness’. According to a statement from Amber’s camp, “Your presence shows where your priorities are. Johnny Depp plays guitar in the UK while Amber Heard waits for a verdict in Virginia. Depp is taking his snickering and lack of seriousness on tour.” On Monday, Johnny Depp performed at a concert in Sheffield, UK, three days after the end of the trial.
After a six-week trial riding on claims and counterclaims of domestic abuse between the Depp and Heard during their fifteen-month-long marriage, the closing argument from both the celebs took place on Friday.
The 58-year-old Depp filed suit against Heard over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in December 2018 in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” She did not name Depp in the said piece. But Depp had sued his ex-wife Amber for $50 million and argued that she defamed him in her opinion piece.
The 36-year-old Heard, however, countersued for $100 million, saying she was defamed by statements made by Depp’s lawyer, Adam Waldman, who called her claims a ‘hoax’.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard married in a private island ceremony in 2015 after courting for several years. The couple called it quits just 15 months later.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Johnny Depp will next be seen as King Louis XV in a new historical drama which will be directed by French director Maiwenn. Depp will play French King Louis XV in a new ‘Jeanne Du Barry’, directed by French director Maiwenn (Polisse).
