Man drives into Berlin crowd; teacher killed, 14 students hurt

GERMANY: A 29-year-old man drove into a crowd of people in Berlin yesterday, killing a teacher and injuring 14 of her students, as his car twice veered onto a pavement in a popular shopping district, officials said. Police identified the driver as a German-Armenian man. He was detained by bystanders and handed over to the authorities.

Lettuce shortage forces KFC to put cabbage in their burgers

AUSTRALIA: Australia’s facing a lettuce shortage that’s led to soaring prices and even spurred fast food giant KFC to put cabbage in its burgers.

The company notified customers that it will use a blend of lettuce and cabbage throughout its restaurants, citing supply chain disruptions after heavy flooding across the east coast wiped out much of the lettuce crop earlier in the year.

Markets in Pakistan to close at 8:30 pm, wedding ceremonies in Islamabad banned after 10 pm

PAKISTAN: In an attempt to save energy, the Pakistan National Economic Council (NEC) has decided to order the closure of markets across the country at 8:30 pm, Geo News reported.

Meanwhile, Pakistan will now ban wedding functions after 10 pm in Islamabad with effect from June 8, Geo News reported. Geo News also reported that only one dish will be allowed at the wedding functions in the capital.

22 killed as van plunges into ravine

PAKISTAN: A vehicle crashed into a deep slope on the Quetta-Zhob National Highway in Pakistan’s Balochistan province early Wednesday, killing at least 22 occupants. The van was on its way to Zhob from Loralai.Five infants, five women, and eleven men were among the dead.

Taliban arrest male Afghan fashion model

AFGHANISTAN: The Taliban have arrested a well-known Afghan fashion model and three of his colleagues, accusing them of disrespecting Islam and the Quran, according to videos released by Afghanistan’s new rulers. Ajmal Haqiqi — known for his fashion shows, YouTube clips and modeling events — appeared handcuffed in videos posted on Twitter by the Taliban intelligence agency on Tuesday.

South Korea office building fire kills 7

SOUTH KOREA: At least seven people were killed and dozens of others were injured on Thursday in a fire that spread through an office building in South Korea’s Daegu city.

Dozens of firefighters and vehicles were deployed to put out the blaze, which began on the second floor of a seven-floor office building near the city’s district court.

Seven people were so far confirmed as dead and 35 others were hurt.

Moderna announces positive results for Omicron vaccine

US: US biotech company Moderna on Wednesday announced positive results for a new vaccine that targets both the original COVID strain and Omicron.

This so-called “bivalent” vaccine was tested in a trial of more 850 adults, who had all received their first three doses of Moderna’s original Spikevax vaccine.
