Army controls unruly mob in Vishwamadu, three soldiers injured

An attempt by an unruly mob to provoke Army personnel manning a guard point in Vishwamadu area in Mullaittivu was thwarted on Saturday night.

The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) issuing a statement yesterday regarding the tense situation reported near an army checkpoint in Vishwamadu said soldiers had to fire into the air to control the situation.

The Army statement noted that the mob was controlled after firing several warning shots to the air after those drunkards began pelting glass bottles and stones at Army personnel on duty around 8.00 pm on Saturday (18).

The army on duty had informed the police and their unit and reinforcements were sent to the scene to bring the situation under control. Two suspects were arrested by the police in connection with the incident.

Three Army personnel sustained injuries in the incident and were admitted to Kilinochchi Hospital for treatment. The statement by the army also noted, “Preliminary investigations confirmed that this was a deliberate attempt by some suspicious elements to sabotage the goodwill and the cooperation that prevail between members of the Security Forces and the public.”
