Suspect killed in firearm discharge during raid

A 30-year-old suspect was killed following the discharge of the firearm of a police officer when he had tried to grab the weapon from the police officer during a drug raid in Neluwa.

Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that the raid was carried out by a team of police officers on Saturday evening (18) based on a tip-off that a drug racket was being carried out in an abandoned house in the Neluwa town area and that a group of persons were also using drugs there. SSP Thalduwa noted that when the police raided the said house and attempted to arrest the suspects, one of the suspects had tried to snatch the pistol from one of the police officers engaged in the raid. At the time the police officer’s weapon had discharged and the suspect had been shot. The deceased has been identified as a 30-year-old resident of Morawaka.Three other suspects who were at the scene had fled and the Neluwa Police are conducting investigations to arrest them. The Police Spokesman further stated that a Superintendent in the Galle Division has been appointed on the instructions of the Senior DIG in charge of the Southern Province to investigate the shooting incident.
