Sri Lanka crisis: Ruling party's MP killed in clashes with anti-government protesters

New Delhi:

The situation in Sri Lanka is not going well for a long time. Earlier on Monday, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa tendered his resignation. Meanwhile, there is news of the death of an MP of the ruling party.

Sri Lanka’s ruling party MP Amarakirthi Athukorla was found dead after clashes with anti-government protesters outside the capital Colombo, police were quoted as saying. It was told that dozens have been injured in the violence at many places.

According to reports, Athukorla opened fire and seriously injured two people who were stopping his car in Nittambuva and then later went to take shelter in a nearby building, where he was later found dead there.

This came to the fore when Prime Minister Rajapaksa himself resigned amid the island nation’s worst economic crisis. “The prime minister has sent his resignation to the president,” an official said on condition of anonymity.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is the younger brother of the Prime Minister. The biggest clash since the start of the crisis took place in Colombo on Monday when supporters of the Rajapaksa family created a ruckus.

Police fired tear gas and water cannons and announced an immediate curfew in Colombo, which was later extended to cover the entire South Asian island nation of 22 million people. At least 78 injured people were reported to have been hospitalised, a Colombo National Hospital spokesperson said.

Officials said the army’s riot squad was called in to strengthen the police. Troops have been deployed throughout the crisis to protect the delivery of fuel and other essentials, but until now the conflict could not be stopped.
