The Central Government, while filing an affidavit in the Supreme Court, requested not to hear the sedition law for the time being. The Central Government on Monday informed the Supreme Court that it has decided to re-examine Section 124A of the Sedition Act.
The Centre, in its affidavit, asked the apex court to wait for the outcome of the government’s exercise and not hear the petitions before it.
According to reports, the Centre further said in its affidavit that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed clear and unequivocal views in favor of protection of civil liberties, respect for human rights and believes that old colonial laws have no place in India.
Last week, the Centre defended the British-era penal law on sedition and a 1962 decision of a constitution bench upholding its validity in the Supreme Court, saying that they have stood the test of time for nearly six decades and that instances of its misuse will never justify reconsideration.
The apex court, in 1962, had upheld the validity of the sedition law, attempting to limit the scope of its misuse.
