Ranil expresses dismay at mob violence

Former Prime Minister and Leader of the United National Party Ranil Wickremesinghe strongly condemned the attack on peaceful protesters at Gotagogama yesterday

The former Prime Minister in a special statement to the media yesterday expressed dismay as to why the Government has resorted to violence when people are demanding a solution for the crisis ahead of the country

Wickremesinghe said that a group of young people had a duty to defend the GotaGo village where they had protested democratically and that the unresponsiveness of all to the youth’s protest was inadequate and that mistake should be accepted.

He said there was no law and order in the country today and not only the Prime Minister, but the entire Government should step down.

Wickremesinghe pointed out that when there is a conflict, the economic pressure increases and if we go to fight each other, it will hurt everyone.

He emphasized that everyone who did wrong should be punished and said that politics could not be carried out in the old way.

He said the youth should also be given representation in Parliamentary Committees. Wickremesinghe said such a journey was the only way to save the country from the collapse of the economy, adding that a new political, economic and social system demanded by the people should be created.
