Independent MPs decry attack on Galle Face, Temple Trees protestors

The Independent Group of MPs yesterday said that they strongly condemn the inhumane attack on the peaceful protestors at Galle Face and Temple Trees by an organized group affiliated to the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).

In a statement the group said, “The peaceful protests sprung up as a result of the country’s economic crisis.

People unleashing their built up pressure through demonstrations had to be expected. Such peaceful protests could not be suppressed by unleashing violence”.

“Today, instability and anarchy prevail in the country. We need to act carefully to get the country out of this situation. The protestors should not be treated with violence. All incited and participated in violent acts must be strictly dealt under the law,” the statement said.
