Over 1,500 arrested, 677 remanded over May 9 arson attacks

Police arrested over 1,500 suspects in connection with the countrywide attacks on houses that occurred on May 9,Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa.

They had been arrested based on 844 complaints received and 677 of the arrested have been remanded after being produced before Courts, he said.

On Saturday (21) alone, the police had received eight complaints on the same and had arrested 152 suspects. 39 of them were remanded by Courts while 101 were released on bail.

Police were to produce the other suspects before the courts yesterday.

The countrywide tense situation on May 9 was reported following the mob attack by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters on the peaceful protesters at Kollupitiya and Galle Face on the same day morning.The houses of several MPs and members of Local Government institutions of the SLPP were set on fire by gangs of individuals during this tense situation.Polonnaruwa District Parliamentarian Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his PSO, Sergeant Gunawardane also lost their lives in Nittambuwa after they were beaten to death by a group of individuals as a result of this violence. The PSO had opened fire at the people who had stopped the MP’s vehicle and assaulted him while the MP was passing the Nittambuwa town.
