Six clubs vie for honours at Rugby Sevens

Six clubs playing in the ‘A’ division rugby will be in the fray at the inaugural 7-a-side Invitation Rugby Tournament organized by the Tri-Forces and Sri Lanka Police will kick off on the 30 and 31 October at the Police Park.

After a barren rugby calendar in the country for almost two years mainly due the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, the Tri Forces along with Sri Lanka Police department opted to revive the game in the country.With the blessing of the Sri Lanka Rugby, Sports Ministry and the Health Ministry the six clubs namely Police, Army, Navy, Air Force, CH and FC and Havelcoks will play in this tournament. The Police and the Tri Forces will field two teams each while the rest will have been limited with a single team due to the Bio-Bubble environment. The tournament will be competed in Cup,Bowl, Plate and Sheild categories.

Meanwhile, Kandy and CR and FC have deiced to keep away from this tourney for reasons known by them and even with their non-availability the organizers have decided to peruse with the tournament which is likely to obtain a prominent sponsor within the next few days. The winners and the runners up along with some other achievements are to be rewarded with attractive prizes where the final is scheduled to be staged on 31 October at the same venue. Nizam Jamaldeen the tournament secretary speaking to ‘Daily News’ said “The stage is set to host the tournament as per the scheduled at the end of this month. Six out of eight teams have confirmed their participation in this inaugural tournament which is organized with the sole intention to revive the game in the country where there is no rugby been played for almost two years.”

“This will be an eye opener for the stakeholders and the rugby loving fraternity to gain an opportunity to witness the oval shaped ball game been played after a long period of time.
