Student activists test positive at quarantine centres – FSP

By Rathindra Kuruwita

Student leaders arrested by the government had contracted COVID-19 inside a quarantine centre in Badulla, Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) Education Secretary, Pubudu Jayagoda said yesterday.

PCRs, conducted when they were remanded, showed that they were COVID-19 free. The student activists were them transferred to the Thaldena Quarantine Centre. However, after 20 days in prison, some of them had contracted the virus, he said.

“On 25 August three student leaders were subjected to testing and were found to be COVID-19 positive. This shows that there is a high risk on virus contraction in these quarantine centres. This is an indictment to the governments’ handling of the pandemic,” Jayagoda said.

The FSP Education Secretary said that Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) convener, Wasantha Mudalige, President of the Sri Jayawardanepura University Students Council, Amila Sandeepa and FSP politburo member Chameera Koswatta have not received any treatment although they are COVID-19 positive.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath said that he was not aware of this development.
