SLFP MPs to donate August salary for COVID relief

The SLFP Parliamentarians’ Group will donate their August salary to provide relief for people in need due to COVID-19, Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

He said the MPs salaries will be transfered the salary to the health sector. Amaraweera said that he has decided to donate his MP salary to provide relief to the public until the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Minister distributed bags of dry food items to affected families in Angunakolapelessa and surrounding villages over the weekend. The Minister made the above remarks to the media while preparing for the event at his residence.

“We, as a group of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) members, accept the request made by the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to be prepared to make a commitment to all the people if the curfew imposed by COVID-19 is to be extended. Accordingly, we all donated the salary we received for this month to the health sector.

And I will not be getting my MP’s salary again from next month until the end of this pandemic. I will donate the salary to provide relief to the people of the Hambantota District,” he said.

“I am ready to sacrifice all the privileges of an MP if necessary. At a time when the people of the country are suffering, all MPs who are paid from taxpayer’s money should make more sacrifices. I am ready to donate even the official vehicles provided to us if required. I respectfully request all Members of the Government and the Opposition to dedicate their salaries as well as other allowances to the people of our country who are helpless due to COVID-19. Also, the Minister’s personal staff can donate at least one month or so to the people of the country,” he added.
