Mail, parcels pile up at Vavuniya Central Post Office due to pandemic

A large number of letters and parcels have piled up at the Vavuniya Central Post Office due to the pandemic. Postal officers said that they were finding it impossible to deliver letters due to the pandemic fears.

Some staff members of the post office too have contracted the virus.

“We also can’t send some letters to other parts of the country because there are no night mail trains. We also have a serious shortage of vehicles that handicaps distribution of parcels in Vavuniya,” an officer said.

Vavuniya health officials said some people did not heed their advice.

Recently, a hotel owner, who had contracted COVID-19 in Vavuniya had refused to go to a treatment centre and turned aggressive when the PHIs tried to removed him.

The patient is a resident of Sinnapudukulam, Vavuniya. He is said to be a diabetic who had undergone heart surgery. Health officers are contemplating taking legal action against him.
