Expect country’s coronavirus death toll to rise

By Rathindra Kuruwita

COVID-19 deaths would increase in the coming two to three weeks, Deputy Director General of Health Services, Dr. Hemantha Herath, said yesterday.

Dr. Herath said that those who were dying now were those hospitalised about two to three weeks back.

“Since then the number of cases has increased and a significant number of them were those who showed severe symptoms and needed oxygen support. So, although the country has gone for a lockdown, deaths will increase for a few more weeks,” he said.

Dr. Herath also urged the public to abide by quarantine laws and to stay at home during the lockdown. “There is no point in having a lockdown if people keep on moving about.

Director of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital, G. Weerasuriya said that 25 to 30 children with COVID were admitted to the hospital daily. Twelve children with the virus had died in the hospital, he said, adding that a number of staff members too had contracted Covid-19, although they had been double jabbed.

Seventeen staff members of the Hatton Hospital including four doctors and six nurses tested COVID-19 positive yesterday and a number of other staff members were sent for quarantine.
