Over 50% of COVID-19 cases reported from WP

Sri Lanka confirmed 2,672 COVID-19 cases in a single day reaching a grim milestone by yesterday morning. At the time this edition went to press, this was the highest number of daily reported cases in Sri Lanka passing the 2,500 mark.

Two thousand six hundred and fifty nine people among those who tested positive for the virus are local residents while 13 were overseas arrivals.

Accordingly, the total number of COVID-19 patients in Sri Lanka increased to 125,905. Currently 20,642 individuals are being treated and 1,314 persons suspected to have contracted the virus and are under medical observation. 104,462 people have fully recovered from COVID-19 and have been sent home.

According to National Operations Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 statistics, 50% of the cases were reported from the Western Province (WP) and 755 cases reported yesterday were from the Colombo District. Three hundred and twenty three cases were reported from the Gampaha district, 234 from the Kalutara district and the other 1,347 cases were reported from other districts.

National Operations Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 stated that a total of 29,230 cases were identified after the New Year.

During the last 24 hours, 1,365 COVID-19 recoveries were sent home. The total number of COVID-19 deaths in Sri Lanka stands at 801, as at Monday morning.
