783 drunk drivers arrested

Police had arrested 783 drunk drivers during special islandwide operations held to nab drunk drivers during the festive season.

From 9 a.m. on April 14 to 6 p.m. on April 15, the Police had arrested 783 drivers. Out of them 534 were motorcyclists, 180 were three-wheeler drivers, and 43 were car drivers. Two bus drivers and 10 lorry drivers were also among the apprehended.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana stated that operations are being conducted round the clock and Breathalyzer tests are being carried out to identify whether the drivers are under the influence of alcohol or have consumed any narcotic substances. In addition to that blood tests will also be carried out.

Moreover, he added that under the legal provisions of the Motor Traffic Act, if the drivers refuse to take a Breathalyzer test, it is presumed that the driver is under the influence of alcohol or narcotics and legal action would be taken against them.

He also noted that if the person is found guilty of drunk driving the court can impose a fine of Rs.25,000 along with six-month imprisonment. The Court can also cancel or temporarily suspend the driving licenses.

The Police during this same period had also taken legal action against 2,844 individuals for various other motor traffic offences.
