PM instructs to renovate historic Hindagala Cave Temple

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs has instructed to immediately renovate the historic Hindagala Cave Temple which has paintings belonging to the four eras of Anuradhapura, Gampola, Kandy and Colombo.

The Prime Minister instructed the Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Ministry Secretary Prof.Kapila Gunawardena to look into the matter and take necessary action immediately, following a recent report in a national newspaper that the historic Hindagala Cave Temple was on the verge of destruction.

Ven. Embilmigama Dhammakiththi Thera, who is in charge of the historic Hindagala Cave Temple, had told the media that many of the paintings in the temple were being destroyed and called on responsible authorities to pay attention to them.

Reconstruction work of this cave temple of historical value will commence soon under the full guidance of the Prime Minister and the Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Ministry Secretary.

Archeology Department and Central Cultural Fund officials visited the Hindagala Cave Temple and commenced renovations in accordance with the recommendations already given.
