UNP will come back strong as Opposition - Ruwan

United National Party Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said that the government wants people to fill their stomachs only for three months. He said it was a shame that the government had announced that the prices of 27 essential commodities would be reduced for three months and they could only be purchased from Sathosa.

Speaking at a media briefing held at the Ramada Hotel yesterday, he stated that the country’s economy has hit the bottom.

The cost of living has gone up and the people have fallen into a state of extreme helplessness. People have to face many problems. The government is so bankrupt that it is still unable to provide uniforms to schoolchildren.

“In addition to internal issues, international issues have also arisen.India and Japan are angry over the Colombo harbour jetty issue. The issue of human rights will resurface before the United Nations in March. How can a country develop like this? A strong Opposition is needed to fight the government. The Opposition should come to the same stage,” Ruwan Wijewardene added.

“They should set aside their personal goals and think together about the country and launch a national programme. The only option to rebuild the country is the UNP. We have the knowledge and ability. All should unite, leaving aside narrow differences and opportunistic objectives,” he said.

“The UNP leaders meet the party members at the Sirikotha party headquarters every Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss about their ideas and issues to reorganise the party. The party has been handed over to young leaders today.

There are more pictures of Rajapaksa’s than Buddha statues at the Jayanthi Vihara in Anuradhapura. There is also a picture of Yoshitha. The Chief Incumbent of the temple also blessed Ruwan Wijewardene,” UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara added.
