Rs.30 mn robbery at Katana businessman’s house

An armed gang had robbed the residence of a businessman in the AkkaraPanaha area in Katana last morning (30), according to the Police Media Division.

Reportedly, the robbers had entered the house of the businessman at around 10.30 am yesterday and robbed over Rs.30 million worth of cash and jewellery from the businessman at gunpoint. The Police said that the gang of robbers had arrived at the businessman’s home in a car and two motorcycles.

The Police Media Division said that it is suspected that there were around five gang members involved in this robbery.

According to our correspondent, the gang of robbers had arrived at the house and retrained the watchman and had entered the house. They had threatened the businessman and the family members with the weapons and stolen the valuables. The car in which the robbers had arrived was recorded on the CCTV camera system, but not the motorcycles.

Initial investigations have revealed that two of the gang members wearing helmets had been seen walking around and the robbers are said to have been in the house for around an hour. They had ransacked the whole house in search of valuables. The number plate of the car in which the thieves had arrived had been covered, and the police suspect that the robbers had been armed with pistols.

The police were engaged in recording statements from the residents yesterday and said that until a full account of the stolen goods are verified, it is not possible to determine the actual value of the stolen items.

Further investigations are being carried out by the Katana Police under the directives of the Negombo Senior DIG Saman Sigera and ASP Palitha Amaratunge.
