Magistrate rejects CID request for warrant to arrest Bathiudeen

Colombo Fort Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage yesterday rejected a request made by the Criminal Investigation Department to issue a warrant to arrest MP Rishad Bathiudeen and two others.

The Magistrate observed that it was not necessary to obtain a warrant from a court in order to arrest MP Bathiudeen and two others based on the nature of the charges filed against them.

The Attorney General had instructed the acting Inspector General of Police to obtain a warrant to arrest MP Rishad Bathiudeen on charges of criminal misappropriation of public funds and violation of election laws over transporting internally displaced persons in Transport Board buses to vote at the 2019 Presidential election. The Magistrate fixed further inquiries for October 27.
