Government overlooked looming COVID threat - JVP

The Government has to take the blame for resurgence of COVID-19 cases as it repeatedly overlooked the looming danger and made the public think that the epidemic was over, JVP Propoganda Secretary MP Vijitha Herath said.

Addressing a press conference at the JVP headquarters in Battaramulla, the MP said the current situation in the country, especially in the Gampaha District, was very risky as the virus was spreading fast.

Observing that the lab reports of PCR tests were taking 4-5 days, he asked the Government to increase the facilities for PCR testing within the Gamapaha District.

“There is no clear evidence to say how the Minuwangoda apparel factory cluster started. There are various opinions even among the workers. It has been revealed that the workers had been asked to work though they were not feeling well. The Government should investigate the various claims and find out the truth in order to safeguard the people.Otherwise, more such clusters may come up,” he commented.

He also requested the Government to look into the needs of the people in the curfew imposed areas as many informal sector workers have been deprived of their daily income.

“We have to face the current situation as one country and the Government must take the lead role. The public should strictly adhere to health guidelines for their own safety,” he added.

Meanwhile responding to a question by a journalist, MP Herath accused that there is a political hand behind the recent set of transfers of Police personnel.

Commenting on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, he expressed the JVP’s strong objection to it, adding that it drags the country backwards.

“We request the Government members to listen to their conscience and not to vote for the Bill. Think about the country’s future. Your vote to this Amendment will boomerang on you very soon,” he said, making an open request from the Government members.
