UNP, SLFP one seat each

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party and United National Party, once the two lading parties in the country, were able to obtain only one seat each at the General Election 2020.

Both parties failed to obtain enough votes for an MP to be directly elected to Parliament. They however received a seat each from the National List.

The SLFP and UNP, the two main political parties between which legislative and executive powers alternated for over six decades, only received a total of 316,014 votes in the General Election 2020. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party received 66,579 votes islandwide which is a 0.57%.

However, SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara noted that 14 SLFP representatives who contested on the SLPP ticket have entered Parliament.

The United National Party, which came in fourth place in most of the polling divisions, received 249,435 votes in all districts which is 2.15% of all the valid votes. Former Prime Minister and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe failed to secure his seat in Parliament for the first time since he entered Parliament in 1977. In the parliamentary election 2015 UNP obtained 106 seats inclusive of the National List.
