Gayantha laments UNP’s defeat

Galle District Samagi Jana Balavegaya Leader and former Parliamentarian Gayantha Karunathilaka expressed sadness over the devastating election setback of the United National Party which has established the fact that the majority of UNPers were with the Samagi Jana Balavegaya.

He was addressing party supporters at the counting centre of Southlands College, Galle following the release of the preferential votes obtained by the candidates.

“The Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) will be vested with the responsibility accomplishing the duty of the Opposition in Parliament in the future. As a responsible opposition we will perform our obligation with in Parliament and outside it as well. We are determined to accomplish our tasks to the best of our capacity for the benefit of the people under the leadership of our leader Sajith Premadasa,” he further said.

“I was very sad over the devastating defeat suffered by the United National Party. The election results have conveyed an important message to the party leadership. Now they should understand who has the won the hearts of the majority of the UNPers. We will assess our shortcomings and rectify them accordingly,” Karunathilaka added.

“The people of Galle have elected me for the third consecutive time with the highest number of preferential votes. I also thank all public service officials and the Police for helping to conduct a peaceful and fair election in the district,” he said.
