Magistrate rejects request to produce Hizbullah in court

Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake rejected President’s Counsel (PC) Wasantha Nawarathna Bandara’s request for an order asking the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to produce his client Hejaaz Hizbullah before courts, yesterday. The request had been made on June 17.

Hizbullah is currently being detained and interrogated by the CID in connection with allegedly aiding and abetting suicide bomber Mohammad Ibrahim Insaf Ahmed, who attacked the Cinnamon Grand Hotel last Easter.

PC Bandara stated that several media institutes have distorted facts about the case. He pleaded for the issuance of an order directing the relevant officers to conduct an investigation into the above incident.

Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake observed that several media institutes had revealed the contents of confidential statements given by two witnesses on June 17 on camera.

He issued an order directing the Western Province Deputy Inspector General of Police to conduct an investigation into the incident. Further inquiries were fixed for August 19.
