AMPHAN cyclone moves away from Sri Lanka

The Super Cyclonic storm ”AMPHAN” lay centered as an Extremely Severe Cyclonic storm over west-central Bay of Bengal and neighborhood, at 11.30 p.m. on 19th May near latitude 18.4°N and longitude 87.1°E, about 1250 km North-east of Trincomalee. It is very likely to move further north-northeastwards away from the island across west Bengal coast during the afternoon today (20th May), stated the Department of Meteorology.

Due to the influence of the system, Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Southern, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces. Heavy showers about 100 mm in the western slope of central hills, particularly in Nuwara-Eliya, Kaluthara, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Galle and Matara districts.

Wind speed can increase up to (40-50) kmph at times over the island.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity during thundershowers.
