Govt.can obtain majority without help of extremist politicians - Keheliya

Government Spokesperson and State Minister of Investment Promotion Keheliya Rambukwella expressed confidence that a majority can be obtained at the upcoming election without the help of extremist politicians and parties. Addressing a press briefing at the Prime Minister’s office yesterday, he said that in order to implement the National Policy Framework Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour, a strong foundation must be laid in Parliament.

Therefore the government requests the public to ensure that the present Government gets a two-thirds majority.

“The Government completes 100 days by tomorrow (14). Eventhough we do not possess a majority in Parliament we completed the work promised by us. By the time we complete the 100 days we are pleased with the services rendered to the public when compared to the work done by the previous government,” Rambukwella said.

He also stressed that elections will not be postponed by the Government and hopefully Parliament will be dissolved by March 2. “We only are against holding elections prior to the due date. We always bow to the public mandate. We are confident of public support as it is our duty to address their issues at the earliest possible time. We are open to holding elections by the due date.”

Minister Rambukwella said that the Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour Policy Framework focused on the workforce, education and technology. “The government has completed the first step of enrolling 100,000 students next year. The foundation has been laid by the government to expand the university student intake. Those who do not pass the Advanced Level examination will be directed to Vocational Training Centers and those who get filtered by the Ordinary Level Exam will be given IT and English knowledge. Youth can have hope in our movement.”

He also said that the government expects Rs. 10 billion in foreign income and initiatives have been launched with this objective.

“The Port City has become a major foreign investment hub. We are creating a safe and conducive environment for investors and national security plays a major role in that. A stable political environment and national security are salient factors for investment.Intelligence courses will be introduced in the near future as the countries that have active participation of Intelligence Units have high investments. A win-win situation will be created for both investors and us. During the last era youth were stifled and their skills were not recognised. However, our programme has laid a strong foundation to motivate the youth and get them to join the workforce.”

He said that the SLPP has extended an open invitation for all the Leftist parties to join them in the General Election to make the National Policy Framework, Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour a reality. Responding to a question raised by a journalist regarding former President Maithripala Sirisena, Rambukwella said that during the oath taking ceremony the former President said he will stay away from politics once his tenure is over. “Therefore, we believe that he will act true to his words. I believe that all the other stories are mere fabrications.
