CAFFE roots for postal voting for private sector

The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CAFFE) has requested the Elections Commission to grant postal voting rights to private sector workers as well. It has made this request in a letter addressed to the Commission.

The letter stated that in comparison to a Presidential Election, there was less enthusiasm among people to cast votes at General, Provincial Council or Pradesheeya Sabha elections.

Moreover, private sector workers employed in the capital city and other major cities had a reluctance to visit their villages to cast their votes at these elections.

At present there is a system of granting leave for private sector workers to cast their votes at elections taking the distance to the relevant polling centre into cognisance. This had caused a problematic situation for residents in outstations to visit their areas spending money only to cast their votes.

As a remedy, some people had the habit of taking additional leave prior to election day or after it to go to their home stations and cast their votes.

This harmed the work efficiency in their workstations.

As such, CAFFE in its letter signed by Executive Director Ahmed Manaz Makeen requested the Elections Commission to prepare a proper strategy to enable private sector workers in sectors such as private hospitals, private security services, hotels and garment factories to exercise postal votes at the time of elections.
