Hirunika wants curb on Net ‘pornography’

Colombo District UNP MP Hirunika Premachandra in a Private Member’s Motion has proposed that a special unit be set up to curtail the circulation of pornographic videos on the internet.

Premachandra in the motion proposed that an effective special unit should be set up “within the Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the individuals who create, distribute and keep the pornographic videos, since the privacy of the people is damaged and the women are mostly inconvenienced seeing that various pornographic videos are circulated, presently in the internet, in abundance.”

The said Private Member’s Motion appears in the Parliament Order Paper dated September 06, 2019.

In 2010, following a report submitted by the Police Women and Children’s Bureau, a court order was issued banning over 100 porn websites and local movies which depicted local actors and actresses.

In 2017, one of the largest pornography websites in the world released its global viewership statistics in which Sri Lanka was ranked high in the list of countries with the greatest increase of watching pornography over the previous year. Sri Lanka came in the eight place, following Belarus and Vietnam.
