The historic Poson Maha Perahera of Polonnaruwa started at the Polonnaruwa Vatadageya on Sunday, under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena, said the President’s Media Division.
According to the historic traditions, the perahera was commenced after the President placed the Perahera Karanduwa (golden casket) containing the sacred relics on the royal elephant.
Under the advice of Solosmasthanadhipathi of Polonnaruwa, Ven. Panditha Vendaruwe Upali Nayaka Thero and Maha Sangha, the perahera was organized by government institutions, the farming community of Polonnaruwa, volunteer organizations and the business community.
The Maha Sangha, the Mayor of Polonnaruwa Chanaka Sidath Ranasighe, District Secretary of Polonnaruwa, Panduka Abeyewardena and the devotees of the area participated in this religious event.
